Tulijoutsen.

    Uhman joutsen, tulipuna lintu,
    purppurana palaa sen sulkien sulkku,
    kypeni syyt sen silmien tuli,
    korkeata kaulaa se ylpeen kaartaa
    ja sydmien veress kylpee.

    Uhman joutsen, joikuva joutsen,
    tulimieli, tulilaulu lintu.
    Kauan se veress ihmisten soutaa,
    kauan se piilee suonien punassa,
    kauan se lymyy mielien yss
    joluen, joikuen hiljaa.

    Hurmeesta, hurmasta lintu se lhtee,
    levitt purppurapaloiset siivet,
    nousevi joikuen ilmojen teille,
    laulavi puuntavan avaruuden alla
    laulunsa suitsevan pilvien halki
    ja porteille taivahan ptyy:

    "Leimussa liekkien kaiu mun uhmani,
    laula liekkien lailla!
    Laula kun palavi taivahan talo,
    laula kun hehkuvi ilmojen pielet,
    sankea savu kun ilmoja kiirii,
    pitk kuin ukkosen lonka!
    Laula sa vapautta valloista taivaan,
    laula sa tulena, viimana vingu,
    puhalla, lakaise puhtaaksi ilma,
    puhtaaksi tahmasta nyrien maa,
    kirkasta, kaunista uutehen ruskoon,
    uutehen uskoon,
    sytyt uusien tulien liekki,
    suurempi entist, kauniimpi vanhaa,
    sytyt ihmiset, sytyt sielut
ja sammu sitten kuin sammuva piv,
    toukoja nuoria siunaa."

    Laulavi lintu, suitsuvi sulka,
    syytvi kypeni silmien ptsi,
    taivahan tammiset seint vaappuu --
    laulavi, tummuvi jumalan tuli
    ja enkelilaulut lakkaa.

LUSIFERIN KANNEL.

Joululaulu tytlleni.

    Muut juhlivat joulua Jeesuksen,
    ma istun sun kuvasi eess.
    Muut juhlivat laulaen, riemuillen,
    mut minun on silmni veess.

    Ma elmn sumuhun eksyin pois,
    pois iloista liiaksi varhain.
    Ja sinkin kaukana luotain oot,
    sin seimilapseni parhain.

    Niin sairas, sairas raukea
    on armahani mun.
    Hn itki, krsi, taisteli
    mun kanssain taistelun.

    Me korkealle pyrimme
    pois orjain kahleista,
    mut epilimme, eksyimme,
    li meidt maailma.

    Hn itki, itki katkeraan --
    ja raukka raukesi,
    p patjalle, ks' rinnalle,
    mun valju tyttni.

    Y synkk uhkaa ulkona,
    tuul' huutaa, vaikeroi.
    mut nuku, nuku rauhassa,
    jo taisto levon toi.

    Jokaista yt seuraapi
    uus' aamun ruskotus;
    suurinta sielun taistoa
    mys suurin vapaus.

    Ei armaani, taistelu konsana ei
    se meille lepoa suo,
    se kutsuu vain uutehen taisteluun,
    se tulta uutta vain luo.

On orja, ken hetkenkin visty voi,
    kun korkeesta kamppaillaan.
    Siis uhmaten, leimuten, taistellen
    vain voittoon tai kuolemaan.

    Me rikomme, nautimme, uhmaamme,
    -- se taivast' on elmmme,
    ja helvetin tuli jos seuraakin,
    niin jatkuuhan liekintmme.

Me jtimme ist ja idit ja siskot,
    nyt sitehet srjetyt, katkotut on,
    nyt yhdess vapaina, kahleitta kymme
    me ylpein uhmaten taistelohon.

    On sitovat, polkevat kotien kahleet,
on orja, ken rikkoa niit ei voi,
    kun vapaus kutsuvi taistelijoitaan,
kun mrn nousevan pivn on koi.

Tuntemattomille merille.

    Vett, vett kynt haaksi,
    painui koti aaltoin taaksi,
    takana ja eess merta --
    pttyneek taival kerta?

    Aallot purjettamme kantaa,
    etsii haaksi uutta rantaa,
    rantaa, mihin nousee kansa,
    vapaa, ylpee voimastansa.

    Etsii purjeet uutta maata.
    Kahleissa ei koskaan saata
    nousta suku, suuri, napaa,
    joka vieroo isin tapaa.

    Vett, vett kynt haaksi,
    painuu kaikki aaltoin taaksi,
    takana ja eess merta,
    pttyneek taival kerta?

                          1905.

Joutsen.

    Ui joutsen vett vlkkyv,
    ilona rannat raikui,
    soi kaislat pivn kullassa
    ja lintuin laulut kaikui,
    ui joutsen kaulaa kaartaen,
    loi katseen syviin vesiin
    ja nki linnun valkean
    soutavan sielt esiin.

    Se oli puhdas, loistava
    kuin talven puhtain hanki.
    Sukelsi joutsen syvyyteen,
    hn kuvansa ol' vanki,
    ui, velloi synkt pohjaveet,
    mut palas murhemiell,
    ei lytnyt hn kultaansa
    vuolaitten vetten tiell.

    Soi suruisina kaislat niin,
    ja kylmi pivn helle.
    Ui joutsen surren kultaansa
    sellle viluiselle.
    Se kauan souti kaivaten,
    mut kerran poikki aavan
    se nki linnun valkean
    luoksensa soutain saavan.

    Hn kuvaksensa tunsi sen,
    mi syviin vesiin haipui,
    nyt sit vastaan riensi hn,

Hekuma.

    Tuhansia ihmisi elmss kulkee,
    tuhansia tulia he rintaansa sulkee,
yksi on sammumaton, voimakas ja ainoo,
    hekuman hehku aina ihmisi vainoo.

Toiset ovat lahoja ja toiset ovat rautaa,
tuli lahon polttavi ja syksevi sen hautaan.
Ken on taasen rautainen, sen liekki karkaisevi.
Pala liekki suurena ja rakenna ja revi!

Lusifer soittaa.

    Leimuaa thdet, leimuaa thdet,
    kylmn kumisee pakkasy.
    Lumi hopeahelmin hohtaa,
    tuike tuikkehen palaen kohtaa,
    leimuaa thdet, leimuaa thdet,
    Lusifer kultakannelta ly.

    Lusifer soittaa, Lusifer soittaa,
    helmen vrjyvi pakkasy,
    kumisee, kajaa.
    Kaiku svelten vaunuilla ajaa
    kentti korkean taivahan.

    Svelet paisuu, svelet paisuu,
    kiihkoisa kannel kiehtoen soi,
    jylisee taivahan pilarit jylht,
    humisee prlyiset autuuden portit,
    humisee, kaikuu
    korkea y.

    Lusifer soittaa, kiehtoen kaikuu
    kannel kiihkojen leimuvien.
    Ihmiset kiihkojen soiton kuulee,
    unohtuu pakkanen, talviy.

    Lusifer soittaa, ihmiset tanssii,
    lieskat taivaan kannella ly.
    Ihmiset tanssii, ihmiset tanssii,
    palavana pyrteen karkelo ky,
    elmn karkelo, verien tanssi,
    tulipuna tanssi,
    kun Lusifer soittaa,
    tulipuna tanssi,
    kun karkeloi veri
    suonissa kiihkoisten ihmisien.

    Lusifer soittaa,
    veri vkevn, kiihken suonissa
    ihmiset palaa,
    riskyvi tulipalo-pakkasy.

Kun lemmest muinoin lauloin,

    Kun lemmest muinoin lauloin,
    min lempe tuntenut en.
    Sen tuloa nainen ma vuotin
    kuin koittoa kevimen.

nyt lemmen, lemmen m tunnen --
se on korkea, synkk kuin y.
mut en en voi min laulaa,
    veri tummaa tulta vain ly.

UHMAAJAT.

Uhmaajat.

-- Mit hyty ylpeiden uhmasta on,
    niin miettivt nyrin rymivt joukot,
he srkevt suojat vain yltmme --
-- Ei tarvitse saastanne suojaa, houkot!

    Ja hyty uhmaajat aattele ei,
he tahkovat vaan tuhon kalskavan ter,
    he srkevt, jllehen rakentaa
se polvi, mi kerran suurena her.

Rukoilijoille.

    Te rukoilette! Kurjat anoo vaan,
    nyrsti ottain, mit annetaan.
    Ei ylpeet koskaan rukoilemaan taivu,
    ei polvillensa milloinkaan he vaivu.

    On kurjaa maassa maaten kerjt,
    on kurjaa syntejns itke!
Jos vrin teit, niin korjaa vryytesi,
    jos kyh olet, kanna puuttehesi!

Kuolemaan vihityt.

    Jo veikot, veikot nouskaamme,
    ei muuten lopu y,
    ei katkee orjankahlehet,
    ei koston hetki ly.
    On arkiryysyt yllmme,
    ne vaihtuu purppuraan,
    Nyt lailla Spartan sankarein
    me kymme juhlimaan.

    On raskaat orjankahlehet,
    on raskast' arkity.
    Me katkomme ne kahlehet,
    jo tulta silt ly.
    On pieni, harva joukkomme,
    ei visty se voi.
    Me oomme kuoloon vihityt,
    hvirtt kalvat soi.

    Me sokeasti ryntmme,
    vaippamme kasvoilla.
    Me kuolemme, mut itsekin
    kylvmme kuoloa.
    On taistelumme toivoton,
    ei koita aamun koi.
    Mut siksi silt hurjemmin
    vain yss salamoi.

    Ol' elo arkiraadantaa,
    se kahleet antoi vaan.
    Nyt katkotut on kahlehet,
    me kymme juhlimaan,
    me vaikenimme elossa,
    nyt saamme uhmata,
    me kuolemme, mut itsekin
    kylvmme kuoloa.

Cola di Rienzi.

    Cola di Rienzi, uneksija inen,
    purppuratogainen, seppelep,
    kiireell korkean palatsin seisoo,
    Rooma allansa myllert.
    Rooma tulimeren likkyy,
    soihdut hulmuu ja manttelit vikkyy,
    kaduilta, toreilta huutoja kaikuu,
    "Kalpoihin veikot", kaikkialta raikuu,
    "kahlehet katkomme, valtio vapaa
    nouseva vuossatain haudasta on."

    Cola di Rienzi, uneksija inen,
    purppuratogainen, seppelep,
    kiireell korkean palatsin seisoo,
    Rooma allansa myllert.
    Kansan kalpoihin, taistoon hn nostaa,
verell vapauden tahtoo hn ostaa --
    koittavi huomen, on tyhjin kadut,
    umpehen laastut on uhmaajan ladut,
    jotka hn aukaisi vapauden tulla,
    kansa ja valtio nukkuvi taas.

    Cola di Rienzi, uneksija inen,
    purppuratogainen, seppelep,
    vaikka sa sorruit, sota-unes aina
    suurena sieluissa kimmelt,
    nousit, tuhansille maalin sa annoit,
    ylvn seppeleptsi kannoit.
    Tuhansia hallitsit, kaikki sun kuuli,
    kuljit kuin ilmojen kahleeton tuuli,
    nousit ja kruunasit itsesi kultaan,
    loistit ja sammuit purppurahan.

                Tukholmassa helmik. 1905.

Attila.

    Attila kulkee, Attila kulkee,
    kumajavi kaviot ja trisevi tanner,
    karjuen hunnien laumat hykk
    kiiten myrskyn seudusta seutuun,
    polkien, pirstoen, ruhjoen, raastoin,
    polttaen poroksi kaupungit, kirkot,
sortaen tornit ja pylvt ja nirkot,
    nostaen, laskien tuliter kalpaa,
    huuhdellen hurmeella kentt ja kummut,
    peitten ruumiilla ruskeat nurmet
    ja tallaten peltojen viljan.

    Attila kulkee, Attila kulkee,
    hurmeessa kahlovi korskuvat ratsut,
    raskaita huuruja taivaalle tytt,
    vapisevi, vaappuvi verinen tanner,
    iskevi salamoina tuliter kalvat,
    kaatuvi ihmiset kuin kulokorret,
    taipuvi nyrin pelkurijoukot.
    Ruhjottu, raastettu Europa ompi,
    ruhjottu kirkon ja kahleiden maa!

Terve, oi barbari, julma ja raaka,
    terve, terve s tuliter kalpa,
    kaada ja lakaise nyrien joukot,
    revi ja raatele luostarit, kirkot,
    pirsto kahleet ja kahleiden luojat,
    tallaa ahtahat siveyskaavat,
    kive plle kiven ei jkn!
    Terve, terve s tuliter kalpa,
    aikansa elneet hautansa saavat,
    paranevi jllehen syvtkin haavat,
    vkevn nousevi elm taas!

    Attila kulkee, Attila kulkee,
    karjuen hunnien laumat lent,
    vapisevi, vaappuvi verinen tanner,
    nousevi, vlkkyvi tuliter kalvat,
    kortena ihmiset myrskyss kaatuu,
    kuolevat, riutuvat vanhat pois.

Laulu itini haudalla.

Sa nuorena sammuit, sa nuorena sammuit,
    sun kuolema keskelt karkelon vei.
    Viel' leimusi poskillasi elmn ruusut,
    ja sydmesi velttona sykkinyt ei.

Sa nuorena sammuit, sa nuorena sammuit,
sa hautaasi tanssit, et hoippunut, oi!
    Siks riemuiten, kiitten kantele kaikuu,
    siks ylisten lauluni sinulle soi.

    En rakasta horjuvaa, vaappuvaa vanhaa,
    en kuivia oksia elmn puun.
    min rakastan nuoruutta, tanssia, tulta,
    en haikeita virsi vapisevan suun.

Min rakastan sit, ken ajoissa lhtee,
ei taakaksi muille ja itselle j.
    Ei vanhoja, raihnaita elm kaipaa,
    on taistossa tiell vain harmajap.

Sa nuorena sammuit, sa nuorena sammuit,
    siks kummullesi kauneimmat kukkani vien.
Sa hautaasi tanssit, et hoippuen kynyt,
se mr on minunkin taistoni tien.

Laulujen laulu.

    Milloin kirkas kestaivas,
    milloin jylh ukkosy,
    mutta aina tulta, joka
    synnytt tai pirstaks ly.

    Miss seisot, siin seiso,
    l visty vaaksaakaan!
    Ole kylm, slimtn,
    l emmi, iske vaan!

Lapselleni.

    Sua isttmksi kun kutsutaan,
    oma lapseni, lapsikulta,
    niin nyt, ett' tuholiekki ei
    voi synty ilman tulta!

"Kuolleet kuolleita haudatkoot",

    "Kuolleet kuolleita haudatkoot",
    Kristus opetti kerran,
    Nyt elm, iloa hautaavat,
    seuraajat saman herran!

    "Sit jumalan st!" huokaillaan,
    kun syysmyrsky sadetta ruutuihin hakkaa.
-- Miks palvella lainkaan niin rntist herraa,
    on parempi vaalia riskyv takkaa!

    Ly salama.
    Sinipunerva sihky
    pilvi puhkoo,
    ilmoja viilt
    kuin Saatanan sil.
    Pirstovi kylt ja kaupungit, kirkot
    kuloksi, karreksi polttaen kaikki,
    ja ihmiset ihaillen
    etlt katsoo,
    kun vaaraa ei ny.

    Mut sihky jylin
    jylh kun seuraa
    kiirien lakea
    korkean taivaan
    kuin vaskiset vaunut,
    miss' ajavi velhot
    paeten ilmojen
    etisiin riin,
    niin nyrin pelosta
    polvilleen vaipuu
    hullut, houkkiot ihmiset.

Mielipuoli.

    Hn lauloi sielunsa kauneimmat kuiskeet,
    haastoi syvimmt svelet sen.
    Hn vihasi, uhmasi, leimusi, lempi
    ja ylisti suuruutta ihmisien.

    He virkkoivat: "mielipuoli on hn."

    Sit surren mielipuoleks hn tuli,
    entisyyttns pilkkasi,
    painoi kasvonsa itkien tuhkaan,
    ruoski ihonsa katuen veriin
    ja uhmaansa anteeksi rukoili.

    He virkkoivat: "Herralle kunnia, kiitos,
    hn terveeksi tullut on uudelleen,
hn jlleen saanut on jrkens valon,
    hn palannut on lammashuoneeseen."

Lasit tyteen!

Lasit tytehen veikot, me juhlimme nyt,
    lasit tytehen viinien tulta!
    Me maljan polttavan, kiehuvan juomme,
    me ruusutarhoja hetkeksi luomme,
mit siit jos myrsky ne srkevi taas,
    pala kauan ei ruskojen kulta!

Lasit tyteen, me juhlimme, nauramme nyt,
    ilohuutomme ilkkuen kaikuu!
    On ihmiset saitoja, viisaita vallan,
    he kokoovat, sstvt varalta hallan,
    he tunne ei rikkautta tuhlarien.
    Ilonaurumme uhmaten raikuu!

    Me tuhlaamme, ilkumme, nauramme nyt,
    joka hetki on tanssia, tulta!
Te kateina kytte, me unhotamme, juomme
ja hermme taasen ja hetkess luomme,
mit viikoissa, vuosissa te ette tee,
    pala kauan ei ruskojen kulta!

    Me emme kaipaa syntein vapahtajaa
    suursynnin: slin maailmaan mi toi,
    vaan odotamme Hnt, joka meidt
    pelastaa tuosta messiaasta voi.

Kainin merkki.

    Me vapaina synnyimme maailmaan,
    ei painanut harteita risti,
    ei jytnyt jnteit orjuuden rauta,
    ei vinkunut yllmme pakkojen piiska,
    me vapaina synnyimme maailmaan
    ilovlkkyvn auringon alle.

    Me vapaina synnyimme maailmaan,
    te piirsitte otsaamme merkin,
    te painoitte rintaamme rikoksien ristin,
    te valelitte phmme saastaista vett
    muka verellemme jhdykett.
    Te loihditte yhdeksi kaksi lihaa,
    te kylvtte salaista sortoa, vihaa,
te syttte lihaa ja juotatte verta
sen miehen mi ristill surman sai kerta,
    te riisttte itien rinnoilta lapset,
    te kastelette viattomat hapset
    ja luette lukuja velhon.

    Me vapaina synnyimme maailmaan,
    te piirsitte otsaamme merkin,
    joka valtaanne meidt iksi sitois,
    joka himomme, halumme ristihin nitois,
    joka rauhan thten loistais.

Ja se merkki se otsassa iti hehkuu,
sit pois pese ei vesi eik veri,
    se tuskan thten kiiluu.
Se merkki on orjuuden, velhojen vallan,
    se punaisena vihana palaa.

    Se palaa synkkn merkkin Kainin,
    se veremme kaameaksi leimuksi muuttaa,
    se sytytt ohimoille kirojen kimman,
    se herttvi aivoihin verisen vimman.
    me kuljemme otsalla orjuuden merkki,
    mi helvetin tulena polttaa.

    Me kuljemme otsalla kypeniv merkki,
    te miekkaanne ette voi nostaa,
    me kuljemme rinnassa salamoina risti,
    nyt aikamme tullut on kostaa.
Te ette voi iske, siksi me iskemme,
ja iskemme siksi kun kahlehet katkee,
me iskemme siksi kun velhojen valta murtuu,
    me ruhjomme, raastamme luolanne, templinne
    ja srjemme jumalainne kuvat.

Me tahdomme pest sen merkin pois,
    mi synken otsalla palaa,
    me tahdomme vapaina, kahleitta kulkea
    risti vailla, vietiss veren,
    helmassa elmn hyrskyvn meren.
    Me tahdomme ylpein kohottaa
    yls taivaalle uhmaavan otsan.

1.F.

1.F.1. Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable
effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
public domain works in creating the Project Gutenberg-tm
collection. Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may contain
"Defects," such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate or
corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other intellectual
property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or other medium, a
computer virus, or computer codes that damage or cannot be read by
your equipment.

1.F.2. LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the "Right
of Replacement or Refund" described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
Gutenberg-tm trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
fees. YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH 1.F.3. YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGE.

1.F.3. LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a
defect in this electronic work within 90 days of receiving it, you can
receive a refund of the money (if any) you paid for it by sending a
written explanation to the person you received the work from. If you
received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium with
your written explanation. The person or entity that provided you with
the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in lieu of a
refund. If you received the work electronically, the person or entity
providing it to you may choose to give you a second opportunity to
receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund. If the second copy
is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing without further
opportunities to fix the problem.

1.F.4. Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you 'AS-IS' WITH NO OTHER
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.

1.F.5. Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied
warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of damages.
If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement violates the
law of the state applicable to this agreement, the agreement shall be
interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or limitation permitted by
the applicable state law. The invalidity or unenforceability of any
provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions.

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in accordance
with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the production,
promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works,
harmless from all liability, costs and expenses, including legal fees,
that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do
or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg-tm
work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any
Project Gutenberg-tm work, and (c) any Defect you cause.

Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg-tm

Project Gutenberg-tm is synonymous with the free distribution of
electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers
including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It exists
because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from
people in all walks of life.

Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the
assistance they need, are critical to reaching Project Gutenberg-tm's
goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg-tm collection will
remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
and permanent future for Project Gutenberg-tm and future generations.
To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation
and how your efforts and donations can help, see Sections 3 and 4
and the Foundation web page at http://www.pglaf.org.

Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation

Project Gutenberg-tm depends upon and cannot survive without wide
spread public support and donations to carry out its mission of
increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
freely distributed in machine readable form accessible by the widest
array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations
($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
status with the IRS.

The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating
charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations
where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To
SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any
particular state visit http://pglaf.org

While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we
have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
approach us with offers to donate.

International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make
any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Please check the Project Gutenberg Web pages for current donation
methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other
ways including checks, online payments and credit card donations.

Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works.

Professor Michael S. Hart is the originator of the Project Gutenberg-tm
concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared
with anyone. For thirty years, he produced and distributed Project
Gutenberg-tm eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg-tm eBooks are often created from several printed
editions, all of which are confirmed as Public Domain in the U.S.
unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not necessarily
keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition.

Most people start at our Web site which has the main PG search facility:

This Web site includes information about Project Gutenberg-tm,
including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary
Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new eBooks, and how to
subscribe to our email newsletter to hear about new eBooks.
